BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The European Union?s executive said on Wednesday it would refer a disputed global agreement to tackle online piracy to the bloc?s highest court to check whether it complies with EU fundamental rights.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which also aims to cut trademark theft, sparked protests across Europe this month over fears of online censorship and increased surveillance.

EU members Germany, Slovakia, Estonia, Cyprus and the Netherlands have refused to sign the agreement on the grounds that it endangered freedom of speech and privacy. Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Latvia have expressed concerns about the agreement?s impact.

?This morning, my fellow commissioners have discussed and agreed in general with my proposal to refer the ACTA agreement to the European Court of Justice,? EU trade chief Karel De Gucht said.

?We are planning to ask Europe?s highest court to assess ACTA?s compatibility with the EU?s fundamental rights and freedoms, such as freedom of expression and information or that of protection,? he told a regular news briefing.

Among other measures, ACTA asks Internet providers to cooperate with national authorities to crackdown on online piracy.

Since talks on ACTA began in Geneva in June 2008, Internet lobbies and health campaigners have rallied against it, saying that overly strict controls of copyright would exclude people from the Internet and prevent developing countries from accessing generic medicines.

The European Commission on Wednesday stood by its decision to ratify ACTA, but said the plethora of complaints against the agreement prompted its decision to refer it to the European court.

?Intellectual property is Europe?s main raw material, but the problem is that we currently struggle to protect it outside the European Union. This hurts our companies, destroys jobs and harms our economies,? De Gucht said. ?ACTA will not censor websites or shut them down.?

In my testing using the DisplayMate suite, the EX7210?s data image quality was adequate for business presentations in which exacting color isn?t required. Tinting was an issue; in many projectors, grays can look slightly greenish; in some test images with this model, the green tint was unusually pronounced. In our text testing, white-on-black text appeared slightly fuzzy, though readable, at the two smallest sizes, with traces of red and green tinted at the two smallest sizes, while the smallest size of black-on-white text was a bit fuzzy and showed a hint of red.

The EX7210?s video quality is good enough for showing short or mid-length clips, though I?d draw the line at movies. There was some loss of detail in bright areas in our test clips, and traces of posterization?abrupt changes in color where they should be gradual. In some action scenes, and scenes where the camera was quickly panning, I saw motion artifacts in the form of a very mild hatching, though I doubt that many viewers likely to be distracted by it.

Other Issues

The projector?s single 2-watt built-in speaker provides decent sound quality and volume, loud enough to be heard in a smaller conference room.

The Epson EX7210 Multimedia Projector is a capable WXGA projector, with a good range of connectivity ports (including HDMI-in and a port for a USB thumb drive that lets you present computer-free) and some nice features like USB Plug ?n Play and a slider for horizontal keystone correction.? Though data image quality is okay for most business presentations, the projector would not be ideal for situations in which exacting color and/or tack-sharp small text is needed.

The slightly heavier (though still portable) NEC NP-M260W ($850 street, 4 stars) and the featherweight Epson PowerLite 1775W, both Editors? Choice projectors, offer better data image quality, while the MP-M260W is bristling with connectivity choices. Hearing that producers were filming a second season of Encrucijada, Andrea Dwyer, of the University of Colorado Cancer Center?s Colorado Colorectal Screening Program (CCSP), approached Anne Smith, principal of Evolve Communications about incorporating colorectal cancer messages into the plot. Smith liked the idea so she presented it to Fuentes and Bejarano.

They also liked the idea.

?At the time, we didn?t have any culturally-relevant information that we could distribute to the Latino population,? says Dwyer, who is also co-chair of the Colorado Cancer Coalition?s Colorectal Cancer Task Force. ?We needed something that could resonate with the community, and we knew that telenovelas were a proven and popular vehicle.?

Dwyer organized the CCSP patient navigators statewide so that the production team could develop an authentic voice around colorectal cancer screening and treatment. The Colorectal Cancer Task Force, Latino Research and Policy Center, Centura Health, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment helped review the messaging.

In one of the episodes, a male resists getting a colonoscopy for some time. When he finally goes in for the procedure, several non-cancerous abscesses are found and later removed. Surprised and taken back, he decides to educate his family and friends about the importance of screening.

?There is a lot of pride about taking care of the family in this population,? Dwyer says. ?We needed to get across that colorectal cancer screening is not only important for you, but it?s important for your family.?

Since the airing of the first Encrucijada, the show has become widely popular. Many viewers utilized the toll-free number that connected them with local health workers and community services. ?Soap operas are like a mirror,? Fuentes says. ?People identify with the characters in the show and if they see a character helping others, they believe they can help too. People want to change their behaviors. They just need a little push.?

Encrucijada debuted on Feb. 12 and will run through July 22, 2012 on Univision Colorado at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sundays. The show repeats on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. on Rocky Mountain PBS?s V-Me channel.

Switching camps: Gray Maynard?s move from Xtreme Couture to AKA

With the massive growth of MMA, the stakes have gone through the roof for fighters in the UFC. Between improved salaries, discretionary bonuses, appearance fees and marketing deals, the difference between a champion and a contender can be staggering.

"These guys are making millions of dollar in every fight. If Gray Maynard was the champion right now, he'd be a millionaire. [...] He's not. He lost a lot of money by losing that fight," Frank Trigg said on "The MMA Insiders Show" on Las Vegas' ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM.

Following a loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 136, Maynard felt that sting. He'd come so close, but in the end, Edgar has the belt and the big assignments.

Maynard, faced with climbing back up the ladder, felt it was time for a change. A Las Vegas mainstay since 2006, he left Xtreme Couture and moved to American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. But it wasn't simply about freshening things up.

"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover," said Trigg, a former trainer partner of Maynard's at Xtreme Couture. "[Maynard] wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention."

John Gunderson, another former teammate of Maynard's in Sin City, echoed the same sentiment about Maynard being less than prepped for the biggest fight of his life."The last fight Gray wasn't mentally prepared or physically prepared for that fight. I don't think he trained hard enough and he knows that. I think if Gray really put the time in and the work in, Gray could finish him," Gunderson said.

Maynard made to decision to extricate himself from the drama well before the Edgar fight took place.

"We knew six weeks before the fight," Trigg said. "Gray said 'look win, lose or draw, this is my last fight. I'm out of here. I gotta leave Xtreme Couture."

Randy Couture, who was away from the gym for much of the early part of 2011, returned to find a big mess and one of his top fighters leaving. Couture cleaned house with coaches Gil Martinez and Ron Frazier moving elsewhere.

Martinez, with a boxing background, was Maynard's main coach. Whether it was his fault or not that Maynard underachieved, it's pretty clear that the former Michigan State wrestler was way too boxing-centric in his fights against Edgar.

It sounds like Maynard is never going to make the mistake of putting his eggs all in one basket.

"He's not officially joining AKA, he's going up there to train. We've all come to the realization that you can't be in one spot anymore," Trigg said. "If you want to be a great MMA fighter, you have to go down and train with Jose Aldo in Brazil. [...] You've got to go to different places. That's why GSP got so good so quickly. He didn't stay in Montreal. Gray has realized that's what he has to do."

Here's hoping the change allows Maynard to take things to the next level. He may still be the best guy in the world at lightweight, but with all the competition out there at 155 pounds, he's probably got a long climb back up the ladder.
